How to Waterproof Your Leaky RoofUpdated 9 months ago

Roof Waterproofing Guide

Waterproof your roof efficiently using Liquid Rubber DIY products. This guide provides all the necessary steps, including solutions for heavily rusted areas and large holes, ensuring a durable and UV-protected surface.

What You’ll Need

Before starting, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Liquid Rubber DIY Waterproof Sealant
  • Geo-Textile: For reinforcing seams, joints, vents, skylights, and other vulnerable areas.
  • Rapid Cure Spray (Optional): Speeds up curing time.
  • Primer/Sealer:
    • For painted or previously coated surfaces, use Primer/Sealer.
    • For raw metal surfaces or areas sanded down to the metal, use Etch Primer.
  • Thermal Coating: White is recommended for optimal heat reflection and UV protection.
  • Cleaning Supplies: High-pressure water, detergent, stiff brush, scrubbing pad. wire-brush
  • Repair Tools: Patch repair kit for any pre-existing damage.
  • Application Tools: Roller, brush, or spray equipment.
  • Safety Gear: Gloves, safety goggles, and a dust mask.
  • Weather Considerations: Choose a dry day with moderate temperatures, avoiding direct sunlight during application.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Clean and Prepare the Surface
Start by thoroughly cleaning the roof to remove dirt, oil, and impurities. Use a water blaster or wire brush for stubborn debris or surface rust. For heavily rusted areas, apply a rust converter to neutralise the rust. Patch large holes with metal sheets to restore structural integrity. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.

  2. Reinforce Vulnerable Areas (Rubber-Geo-Rubber Method)
Identify cracks, holes, seams, screws, and joints. Apply a layer of Liquid Rubber Sealant to these areas. While the sealant is still wet, embed pre-cut Geo-Textile into the sealant, ensuring there are no wrinkles or air bubbles. Apply a second layer of Liquid Rubber Sealant over the Geo-Textile to create a durable, flexible barrier.

  3. Prime the Surface
    Depending on the surface type:

    • For painted or previously coated surfaces: Use Primer/Sealer to ensure proper adhesion.
    • For raw metal or sanded-down areas: Apply Etch Primer for effective bonding.
    • Apply the primer evenly using a brush, roller, or spray machine. Allow it to dry completely before moving to the next step.

  4. Apply Liquid Rubber DIY Waterproof Sealant
Coat the entire roof using a brush, roller, or spray machine. Ensure each layer is even and achieves a minimum thickness of 2mm per coat. Cover all protrusions and edges to create a continuous waterproof barrier. Allow the first coat to cure for at least 24 hours before applying additional layers.

  5. Finish with Thermal Coating
Once the Liquid Rubber Sealant is fully cured, apply 3 coats of white Thermal Coating (available in all Colorbond colors) for superior UV protection and heat reflection. Allow each coat to dry as per product guidelines. This final layer enhances the durability and energy efficiency of your roof.

Important Notes:

  • Apply products early in the morning or late in the afternoon during summer to avoid intense sunlight.
  • Ensure no rain, dew, or cold wind is forecasted for at least 24 hours after application.
  • Do not apply products in temperatures below 10°C or above 32°C.
  • To speed up curing, use Rapid Cure Spray. Avoid using a brush or roller on wet Rapid Cure Spray.
  • For concrete surfaces, prime with a high-quality 2-part epoxy before applying Liquid Rubber.

For Drinking Water Collection:
If you’re collecting rainwater for drinking purposes, disconnect the downpipes for the first downpour to allow the system to wash thoroughly before reconnecting. Alternatively, once the Thermal Coating has fully cured, you can power wash the surface and then reconnect the downpipes. Rest assured, Liquid Rubber DIY products are safe for rainwater collection and will not compromise water quality after the recommended washing process is complete.
