Balcony Waterproofing Guide
Waterproofing your balcony is essential to prevent leaks, protect against structural damage, and increase its longevity. Using Liquid Rubber DIY products, you can create a strong, flexible, and watertight barrier that ensures your balcony remains weather-resistant and durable. Follow this simple guide to achieve a professional, long-lasting finish.
Why Waterproof Your Balcony?
✔ Prevent Water Damage: Stops water from seeping into seams, joins, and flooring.
✔ Protect Structural Integrity: Prevents deterioration caused by moisture and exposure.
✔ Extend Lifespan: Adds durability and protects against cracks and weathering.
✔ Improve Surface Finish: Creates a stable, waterproof base before tiling or final coatings.
What You’ll Need
Before starting, gather the following materials and tools:
- Liquid Rubber DIY Waterproof Sealant
- Geo-Textile: For reinforcing cracks, corners, and joints.
- Rapid Cure Spray (Optional): Speeds up curing time.
- Cleaning Tools: High-pressure water blaster and leaf blower.
- Application Tools: Brush, roller, or LRDIY spray machine.
- Safety Gear: Gloves
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Surface
- Thoroughly clean the entire balcony surface to remove dirt, dust, and any loose materials.
- Use a leaf blower to remove any excess debris and ensure the surface is completely dry before application.
2. Reinforce Seams, Joins, and Screw Holes
- Pre-cut Geo-Textile to cover seams, wall-floor joins, and screw holes.
- Apply a first coat of Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sealant to these areas using a brush.
- While the sealant is still wet, embed the Geo-Textile into the sealant, making sure to smooth out air bubbles and wrinkles.
- Once positioned, spray Rapid Cure Spray (optional) to set the product and accelerate drying.
3. Apply Waterproof Sealant to the Full Surface
- Once the initial reinforced areas have dried, apply a first coat of Waterproof Sealant across the entire balcony surface using a brush, roller, or spray machine.
- Ensure even coverage for maximum protection.
- If rain is expected, spray Rapid Cure Spray after application to speed up drying.
4. Apply the Final Coat of Waterproof Sealant
- Apply a second coat of Waterproof Sealant across the entire surface in the opposite direction to the first coat.
- Additional coats can be applied if necessary.
- Recommended thickness: 1.5mm dry-film (approximately 2 liters per square meter).
5. Allow to Cure Before Tiling or Finishing
- Allow the Waterproof Sealant to cure for at least 24 hours per 1mm of thickness (longer in cold weather).
- Typically, a full cure takes 2-3 days before the surface is ready for tiling or final finishing.
Additional Tips
- Apply the product early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid extreme temperatures.
- Ensure the surface is completely dry before application to prevent adhesion issues.
- Use Rapid Cure Spray to accelerate drying if rain is expected.
- For tiling, ensure the sealant has fully cured before proceeding.
